Schooner Lake Paddle and Camping

The Canoe Club is planning to have its annual canoe/camping trip on beautiful Schooner Lake, north of Plevna. It is one of the prettiest camp sites in Ontario which is why the club has been going there for decades. There is a spectacular cliff along the north shore of the lake, rivaling that of Bon Echo. There is no drive in camping, only water access. It is about a 50 minute paddle from the boat launch to the sandy beach at the camp site that has lots of room on an elevated rocky point of land under tall pine trees.

The trip is scheduled for early October to fit peak fall colors. There are several challenging but very rewarding hikes to some look outs. Sometimes we paddle down Mackie Creek to Centennial Lake. The resident bald eagle is frequently seen. We have our favorite camp site reserved for 4 nights, Thursday October 9 to Monday October 13, and another lovely camp site reserved nearby for Sunday night. If events@cataraquicanoe.ca to indicate which dates you are available and whether you would rather paddle canoe or kayak.

Difficulty: novice/intermediate

CCC AGM

The Board will report on Club activities over the last year. The Club has had a very successful year both on and off the water!  We are fortunate that Club membership has remained stable but it does present the challenge of meeting our Bylaw attendance quorum requirement. We require 10% of our membership to attend in order to conduct the AGM. We currently have 256 members, so we need at least 26 people signed in at the beginning of the meeting. Last year the proxy votes helped us achieve quorum. You can consult the Club Bylaws regarding voting rights (article 9.4) here. The Minutes of last year’s AGM can be found here.

If you plan to attend the upcoming AGM, please sign up using Teamup.  But if you cannot attend, you can ask a voting member who is attending the meeting to vote on your behalf. And if you do not have a proxy holder we can arrange for one on your behalf. Please notify Stephen at membership@cataraquicanoe.ca of the name of the member who will be holding your proxy vote or if you would like us to assign one for you, at least 7 days prior to the AGM.

On completion of the administrative portion of the meeting, the evening will finish with a  presentation by Kevin Callan titled:
“How to be a Happy Camper”
Kevin Callan is the author of 20 books, including the bestselling The Happy Camper and Wilderness Pleasures: A Practical Guide to Camping Bliss. Check out his web site at www.kevincallan.com and YouTube channel KCHappyCamper.

Saturday Oct 18 2025
Frontenac Challenge Canoe Trip

This is an annual trip for the Canoe Club and a highlight of the year. We will do six lakes and six portages inside Frontenac Provincial Park. The trees will be in full colour and it is spectacular. Some of the portages are up to a kilometer long and this works well with light weights canoes better than with kayaks. The light weight club canoes will be available to rent for this event. Generally, one person takes the equipment, the other the canoe.

You will see parts of the park you have never seen before. Once you leave the boat launching ramp, you will see few other people. We can match paddlers up for this event to get two in each canoe.

The reward for this trip is proportional to the effort. The pace will be leisurely but you must be in fit condition. There will be great photo opportunities along the way and is a club favourite.

Difficulty: intermediate
Duration: 7 hours
Distance: approx 17km
Highlights: Beautiful fall colours and sense of accomplishment upon completing the route.

Saturday Oct 18 2025
Family Paddle on Gould Lake

Come and join us for a family paddle at Gould Lake! We will enjoy a relaxed outing on the water, perfect for families and beginner paddlers. The paddle will be kept short (about 3-4 hours) to accommodate our younger participants, with a break to allow them some time to explore and stretch their legs. Bring along a packed lunch and join us for a casual paddle picnic. Estimated distance of 6 km. We will aim for 10 boats or less. Please aim to be ready for the water at 10am.

Saturday Oct 25 2025
Big Salmon Lake Hike

Enjoy the Fall colours in Frontenac Park and, if doing the Challenge, add it to your completed hikes.

The Big Salmon Lake hike is probably the best hike in the Park, not as difficult as Slide Lake and with scenic views around the lake. It is 17 km long and takes 5 to 7 hours at a moderate pace. A daily vehicle pass is required for all cars. It can be obtained at: https://reservations.ontarioparks.com , up to 5 days in advance. Note there is no charge for it if you already have an annual pass. Bring lunch, water and take tick precaution.

Difficultly: intermediate
Duration: 5-7hours
Distance: 17 km

Highlights: Beautiful scenic views and a sense of accomplishment.

We are lucky to have the rugged Gould Lake trails so close to Kingston. At this time, we will have scenic views unimpeded by tree leaves. However, trails may be muddy, icy, or snow covered. Please wear appropriate footwear (icers/snowshoes if needed). We will hike about 6-7.5 km of the east side trails.  Packing warm tea or lunch thermos helps fight the cold.

Bath Water Tower Hike/Snowshoe

Type: Hike/Snowshoe

This is a series of trails introduced to the club 3 years ago passing by the Bath Water Tower and the perimeter of Millhaven prison. There are a number of pretty trails that are relatively flat meandering through trees and meadows. Depending on conditions we will either hike or snowshoe. Distance is approximately 7 km.

There is a variety of groomed trails for classic and skate skiing, plus a scenic back country route, together with warm-up huts. We will do about 12 km of classic skiing and 7 km of backcountry (optional). There is a park fee per car unless you have an annual pass.

Blue Mountain Ski/Snowshoe

This trip is aimed to be a combination of trail and off-trail skiing/snowshoeing at Blue Mountain on the south side of Charleston Lake. The hiking trails leading to and from Blue Mountain are great for skiing and snowshoeing, with enough snow permitting. There are opportunities to stray from the trail to take in other points of interest. The ascent to the top of Blue Mountain is challenging and the view from the top wonderful. If there are a sufficient number of snowshoers and suitable weather, a separate trip for snowshoers on Sunday could be possible. This may be a hike depending on the amount of snow.

Difficulty: intermediate
Duration: 6 hours
Distance: 13 km
Highlights: view from Blue Mountain summit

Saturday Feb 15, 2025
Frontenac Park Swamp Hop

This trip has been a club favourite for decades. It starts at the trail centre of Frontenac Park and weaves across a myriad of frozen swamps to the south and east. The terrain is very scenic. Distance and difficulty can be adjusted for the participants, but generally significant hills can be avoided. The trip is suitable for skis or snowshoes. Depending on levels of interest, multiple trip groups can be organized, including separate trips for skiing and snowshoeing. If conditions aren’t suitable for skiing/snowshoeing, a hike will be substituted.  Park fees apply and you get a Daily Vehicle Permit either online or at the Park Office to be assured of a parking spot.

Difficulty: intermediate
Duration: 6 hours
Distance: 15 km
Highlights: scenic backcountry ponds

Hike at Big Sandy Bay

A hike to a huge, sandy beach with sand dunes and often interesting natural ice sculptures along the shoreline (weather permitting). With luck, we may see wildlife on the way. We will hike for 4–6 km, your choice. We will depart  Kingston to Wolfe Island at 10:00 am to return by 4:00 pm. The ferry ride is free, but some days it can be full, so we encourage carpooling from Kingston.

A few hours of skiing, snowshoeing or hiking depending on the weather, trail conditions and individual preferences with a distance of 10-12 kms. Karen will lead the outing along the Cataraqui trail beginning from Ingrid’s home on Songbird Lane at the northeast end of Sydenham Lake. Arrive at 9:45 for a 10:00 departure. Bring your lunch and a beverage to enjoy in the early afternoon on the trail or later, outside on Ingrid’s deck where a hot beverage will be served. Please be advised that indoor facilities will not be available.

Sam has led hikes on these fascinating trails, so it’s my turn to share them with you. You will see interesting geological structures, caves and great shoreline views. If icy, the trail can be treacherous, so bring your “icers” please! Also bring water, snacks and a lunch. The hike should last about 4-5 hours and will be of intermediate difficulty with a distance of about 10 kms.

The park is technically closed, although the road is ploughed up to our meeting place, so you should not need a park pass.

Family/beginner paddle – Killenbeck Lake

This paddle will be geared towards families and beginners. We’ll leave from a small private beach on Killenbeck Lake. This is a small lake with limited boat traffic (about 2 km by 0.2 km). Paddling distance will be limited by participant abilities (and the lake size) with time to picnic/BBQ after the paddle. Assistance may be available to rent/load club boats on cars ($20 fee applies to borrow club boats). There may be limited capacity for another member to transport a boat for you.

Parking is limited so preference will be given to families or beginner paddlers who don’t attend other trips. There is also an option for more experienced paddlers to launch at the public boat launch. This paddle will be dependent upon low wind and warm weather. All day
