We will be planning trips from October to the end of January 2022. Of course, not everybody is expected to lead a trip, and may feel they lack skill, but everyone has a favourite walk to share, and the club is always appreciative of party hosts – next opportunity being Christmas.

(If you have a trip to offer but can’t make the party, please email Margaret: wildmargaret@yahoo.ca)

SUNDAY, AUGUST 22 – MOTHERS DAY PADDLE – 14 ISLAND LAKE

Fourteen Island  Lake is generally inaccessible to the general public but a generous friend has offered the use of his access point for us to explore this lovely lake.

It will be a leisurely paddle set to the comfort level of the most laid-back paddlers in the group. We will explore the shoreline, looking for turtles and waterfowl for about an hour, then stop for a lunch/snack break on an island. Swimming is good there so bring your suit and towel. The island is the site of a recently demolished cabin and there may be a few nails remaining so appropriate footwear is recommended if you want to wander around the 3 acres on the island. Following the break we’ll paddle approximately another hour or so, and head back to our launching point.

Parking space is modest so there will be a limit to the number of people who can come.

We will explore the shoreline, looking for turtles and waterfowl for about an hour, then stop for a lunch/snack break on an island. Swimming is good there so bring your suit and towel. Following the break we’ll paddle approximately another hour or so, and head back to our launching point.

There are invariably beaver dam lift-overs which are easier to manage with a canoe rather than a kayak.  A short (optional) hike will be arranged around the lunch stop.

The creek is sheltered but water and air temperatures may remain low. Suitable for experienced paddlers.

SATURDAY, MARCH 06 – BIG SANDY BAY HIKE

Big Sandy Bay, Wolfe Island, is a new club hike and only a short drive, with
a free ferry ride, perhaps through ice.  It is a one km. hike from the parking
lot to the beach, and the beach is 3 km. long.   There are sand dunes and
neat ice formations along the shore.   The Snowy Owl population is low at
the moment, but there is usually a few sightings. An immature Bald Eagle
flew overhead a week ago.

This 8km hike is suitable for all, no special equipment is needed.   Call
Steve at 613-542-1054 or email at manderssteve@yahoo.com.

SATURDAY, MARCH 13 – SKI MURPHYS POINT
SATURDAY, MARCH 13 – HIKE AT MARBLE ROCK

Due to warm temperatures, previously planned ski is replaced with an 11km hike at Marble Rock, just north of Gananoque. Very scenic, fairly rugged. Bring ice grips.

Contact Robert – email: retolley@hotmail.com or call 613-542-9626 for details.

SATURDAY, MARCH 20 – HIKE DEPOT LAKES CONSERVATION AREA
Depot Lakes Conservation Area is nestled in the heart of the Land o’ Lakes
tourist region, just north of the village of Verona. Most of us have enjoyed
paddling in this lovely area, but may not have thought about it for walking,
where it is in fact one of the most scenic hikes in the area.

Join Jim and Dagmar for approx. 8km in rugged territory. Call 613-
305-2849 for more information.

SATURDAY, MARCH 27 – RIDEAU TRAIL HIKE
A hike from the Gould-Lake barn on the Rideau Trail and around the Ridge-
Walk loop. Includes a panoramic view of Gould Lake from atop the highest
bedrock ridge within sight of it.

Approx 10km of rugged terrain with some steep sections. Call Dugald
at 613-542-8628 to take part.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 13 – FRONTENAC PARK SWAMP HOP

This is backyard territory for Janice and Eric who expertly weave their way across frozen swamps to find the most favourable scenic route. Starting from the trail centre, this may be a hike, ski or snowshoe depending on conditions.

Park fees apply. Contact Janice for latest indications by email (preferred): Janice.ley@gmail.com  or call 613-542-9958.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20 – HIKE/SKI/SNOWSHOE BLUE MOUNTAIN

This trip is a combination of trail and off-trail skiing/hiking at Blue Mountain on the south side of Charleston Lake. The hiking trails leading to and from Blue Mountain are great for skiing, and there are opportunities to stray from the trail to take in other points of interest. The ascent to the top of Blue Mountain is challenging and the view from the top wonderful. Depending on conditions we may ski down or scramble on foot if hiking.

Call Jim for an update: 613-382-8682.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 28 – CATARAQUI TRAIL OUTING (Date updated)

A few hours of skiing/snowshoeing/hiking (depending on weather and inclination) on the Cataraqui Trail led by Karen, starting from Ingrid’s home at the north east end of Sydenham Lake. Bring your lunch to enjoy early afternoon on the trail or later outside on Ingrid’s deck, where a hot beverage will be served. (Please remember that due to COVID-19 restrictions, indoor facilities cannot be available.)

Contact Karen for details by email (preferred) karenjane128@gmail.com or call 613-547-2691 (before 9 p.m.)

SATURDAY, JANUARY 02 – NEW YEAR HIKE, SKI OR SNOWSHOE

The location and activity will depend on conditions. Possibilities are Murphys Point, Charleston Lake, or perhaps something more local, for example Frontenac Park or Little Cat. The activity could be a hike, snow shoe or possibly a ski if there is sufficient snow base. Park permits might be required.

Call Don at 613-929-8099 to learn more.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 09 – HIKE/SKI EAST END FRONTENAC PARK

We start at the end of Clear Lake Road. Hike on a dirt road for 3 km to the park gate. Another kilometer gets us to Salmon Lake Loop. Here we have a choice: head toward campsite #5 and on to Slide Lake Loop and Mink Lake lookout (about 5 km); do Clear Lake loop (9 km); or head for Hemlock Lake loop (1 km to get to it and 5 km on the loop). The distances are roughly equivalent (18 km, 17 km or 15 km), and the terrain also.

Contact Ed at ejezak@bell.net, or 613-389-4459 to take part.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 16 – MASSASSAUGA HIKE OR SNOWSHOE

Each year Janice and Eric generously invite members to enjoy their property in the scenic Massassauga backcountry.  Janice will recommend a hike or snowshoe depending on conditions. Usually rare, but the possibility for cross-country skiing or skating does exist. Warm beverage to be served (outside) afterwards.

Phone or email Janice: 613 542-9958 or janice.ley@gmail.com for latest indications.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 23 – CATARAQUI TRAIL HIKE OR SKI

Join Steve for a hike/ski on the Cataraqui Trail off Perth Road. This is a rails to trail, so the terrain is mainly flat but surprisingly scenic with mysterious caves and railway memorabilia along the way.

Easy to get to, with ample parking, this trip is suitable for all. Distance to be determined. Call Steve: 613-542-1054 to take part

SATURDAY, JANUARY 30 – SKI MURPHYS POINT

Murphys Point is sufficiently north to frequently boast excellent conditions when less than ideal locally. There are 20 km of ski trails, some for classic and skate skiing, plus a scenic back country route, together with warm-up huts. When snow is good, we often take advantage to make more than one trip, and if not we will take a hike closer to home.

There is a park fee per car. Email Robert at retolley@hotmail.com or call 613-542-9626 for details.
